Haydn and Dvořák: A String Quartet in Musical Dialogue
On Sunday, November 1, 2026, the auditorium of the Galileo Community School in Jena-Winzerla will transform into a concentrated sound space for great chamber music. At Neighborhood Concert Winzerla № 1, a quartet from the Jena Philharmonic presents two works that show in different ways how freely and expressively the string quartet genre can be conceived.
Between Viennese Classicism and Bohemian Sound Language
Joseph Haydn's D-major quartet op. 20 No. 4 opens the program. The work from 1772 belongs to the so-called sun quartets and signifies Haydn's sovereign handling of motivic work, counterpoint, and disrupted form. The four voices emerge independently, respond to each other, and condense into a finely balanced musical architecture.
Dvořák's Musical Return to Bohemia
Antonín Dvořák's String Quartet No. 13 in G major op. 106 was composed in 1895 after the composer's return from the USA. Dance-like impulses, broadly spread melodies, and characteristic Bohemian twists combine with the experiences from his time in the New World. The orchestration remains chamber music transparent while the four instruments unfold a wide spectrum of expression in lively synchronization.
Four Musicians from the Jena Philharmonic
Weronika Tadzik and Christoph Hilpert take on the two violin parts, Karina Suslov-Götz plays viola, and Alexander Wegelin plays cello. Together, they guide the audience through the sound possibilities of the quartet: from the intimate interplay of individual voices to the powerful collective tutti. The closeness of the auditorium creates a direct live atmosphere where every articulation, every breath, and every dynamic nuance becomes audible.
Experience Music, Winzerla Encounters Itself
The concert takes place as part of the season focus Planet Dvořák. During the concert break, students from the community school will offer coffee and cake. Thus, the concentrated stage performance connects with a neighborhood concert experience, bringing classical music right into the community.
Conclusion: An Afternoon for Curious Ears
Neighborhood Concert Winzerla № 1 promises a musical journey from Viennese Classicism to Bohemian-influenced late Romanticism. Those who want to experience Haydn's precise dialogues and Dvořák's colorful sound language up close will find a special concert venue in the auditorium of the Galileo Community School. Ticket sales begin on October 19, 2026.
