Everybody photographing? A photographic memory of Jena between everyday life and the present
The exhibition Everybody photographing? Everyday and Amateur Photography in Jena at the Jena City Museum opens a view of a visual culture deeply rooted in the social life of the city. From the beginnings of amateur photography through the photo circles of the GDR to smartphone shots and social media, a multifaceted panorama of photographic practice unfolds.
Photography as an expression of everyday life
Historical photographs from the collections of the City Museum, private archives, and photo clubs enter into an exciting dialogue with current works by social media photographers. The exhibition presents photography not just as a technical image production, but as a creative means of expression, medium of remembrance, and social link.
Between photo circles, city history, and digital images
Particular attention is given to the long-established photo circle UNIFOK Jena e. V., which has shaped the photographic scene of the city since the 1960s. Its archives and selected works make visible how amateur photography in the GDR created community, conveyed knowledge, and documented personal as well as societal realities.
The five thematic areas of the exhibition lead through different forms of photography. Analog methods, private memory images, photographic self-staging, and digital image practices appear as parts of a continuous cultural history. It becomes clear how cameras, motifs, and dissemination methods change, while the need for visibility, remembrance, and exchange remains.
Aesthetic experience and cultural education
The examination of the works connects art-historical classification with everyday observations. Cropping, light, materiality, and the impact of photographic series open a sensual engagement with the city and its inhabitants. The exhibition encourages questioning one’s own relationship with images: What do photographs preserve? What stories do they tell? And how do images shape our interactions?
As part of a nationwide research and transfer project on amateur and everyday photography, the exhibition connects museum curation with cultural scientific research and cultural education. Participants include the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore in Dresden, the Institute for Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at the University of Göttingen, the Seminar for Cultural Anthropology and Cultural History at the University of Jena, the Technical Collections Dresden, and the LWL Museum Henrichshütte.
