Photography as a Mirror of Everyday Life, Memory, and Community
The exhibition Everyone Photographing? Everyday and Amateur Photography in Jena at the Jena City Museum opens up a view of a local image history that ranges from the beginnings of amateur photography through the photo circles of the GDR to smartphone and social media images. From September 4 to December 30, 2026, a diverse artistic experience unfolds between historical documentation, personal memory, and contemporary visual communication.
A Dialogue Between Past and Present
Historical images from the collections of the City Museum meet private archives, collections from photo clubs, and current works from social media photographers. The exhibition makes visible how photographic image practices change while also preserving familiar functions: photographs capture moments, tell stories of the city and society, and create connections.
The Focus on Jena's Photography Culture
Particular attention is given to the photo circle UNIFOK Jena e. V., which has shaped the photographic scene of the city since the 1960s. Its archives and selected works provide insight into the photographic work of amateurs in the GDR. An accompanying publication documents the development of the association and expands the consideration of works with biographical and cultural-historical perspectives.
Photography as Cultural Education
The exhibition questions what our images reveal about ourselves, about Jena, and about the times we live in. The curation connects art historical classification with everyday cultural education. Photography appears as a creative means of expression, as a medium of memory, and as a social link. Accompanying events and participatory formats invite visitors to contribute their own perspectives.
Research Project and Local Perspectives
The presentation is part of a nationwide research and transfer project on amateur and everyday photography. Participants include the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore in Dresden, the Institute for Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at the University of Göttingen, the Seminar for Cultural Anthropology and Cultural History at the University of Jena, the Technical Collections in Dresden, and the LWL Museum Henrichshütte in Hattingen. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation.
Exhibition Atmosphere and Aesthetic Experience
Between analog prints, private snapshots, and digital image worlds, a multifaceted spatial effect emerges. Different formats, materials, and photographic surfaces draw attention to details of everyday life: faces, places, movements, and situations that acquire new meaning in the image. The exhibition connects sensual contemplation of works with the question of how seeing, remembering, and sharing shape our coexistence.
Conclusion: Seeing Jena Anew Through Images
Everyone Photographing? offers an inspiring encounter with the history and present of Jena's photography culture. Art enthusiasts, photography lovers, and all those interested in city history and visual memory experience an exhibition that takes private images seriously and makes their social significance visible. A visit to the Jena City Museum promises cultural enrichment, new perspectives, and a lasting aesthetic experience.
