Photography as a Mirror of Everyday Life: Jena Discovers Its Visual History
The exhibition Everyone Takes Photos? Everyday and Amateur Photography in Jena at the Jena City Museum opens the view to a visual culture that has long become part of everyday life. From September 4 to December 30, 2026, historical photographs, private image archives, photographs from Jena photo clubs, and current works from social media will meet.
Between Memory, Community, and Present
Photography appears here not only as technical image production but as a cultural practice. It preserves personal memories, documents societal changes, and fosters community. The exhibition asks what private images tell us about a city, its residents, and the respective time.
From Amateur Cameras to Smartphones
The historical development ranges from the beginnings of amateur photography through the photo circles of the GDR to the digital image practices of today. A particular focus is on the traditional photo circle UNIFOK Jena e. V., which has shaped the photographic scene of the city since the 1960s. Its archives and selected works make visible how photography is learned, shared, and collectively developed.
A Dialogue Between Analog and Digital Images
The curatorial juxtaposition of analog photographs and today's social media images opens up a multi-layered examination of work. Different materials, visual languages, and presentation forms relate to one another. This creates an exhibition atmosphere in which aesthetic experience and cultural-historical analysis are closely linked.
Cultural Education and Art Historical Classification
The exhibition is part of a nationwide research and transfer project on amateur and everyday photography. Involved are, among others, the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore in Dresden, the Seminar for Cultural Anthropology and Cultural History at the University of Jena, the Technical Collections Dresden, and the LWL Museum Henrichshütte in Hattingen. This collaboration connects museum collection, scientific research, and cultural education.
An Art Experience for Photography Enthusiasts and City History Interested Parties
Visitors to the exhibition experience photography as the painting of light, as visual memory, and as a social bond. The historical photographs invite careful observation, while contemporary image practices raise questions about public representation and digital memory. The city museum thus becomes a place where personal experience and the history of photography immediately intertwine.
The exhibition offers an exciting connection of photographic art, city history, and media culture. Visitors can expect a multifaceted art experience about the power of everyday images. Anyone wanting to understand how photography shapes our togetherness should not miss this exhibition at the Jena City Museum.
