Everyone taking pictures? A photographic memory of Jena

The exhibition Everyone taking pictures? Everyday and amateur photography in Jena at the Jena City Museum opens a window to a photographic practice that has long become an integral part of everyday life. From September 4 to December 30, 2026, historical photographs, private image archives, materials from photo clubs, and current works from social media will converge.

Photography between memory and present

At the center is the question of how photography shapes our interactions. Photography appears as a creative means of expression, as a medium of personal memory, and as a social link. The exhibition follows the development from the beginnings of amateur photography through the photo circles of the GDR to today’s smartphone and social media images.

Jena reflected in private image worlds

The examination of works leads through various photographic formats, materials, and visual languages. Black-and-white photographs, private snapshots, and contemporary digital works tell stories of the city, everyday life, family, and social change. The atmosphere of the exhibition thrives on the interplay between documentary precision and personal closeness.

UNIFOK Jena and the culture of photographic seeing

A special emphasis is placed on the traditional photo circle UNIFOK Jena e. V., which has shaped the city’s photographic scene since the 1960s. Open archives and selected works provide insights into amateur photography in the GDR. An accompanying publication documents the development of the association and the work of its members.

Photography as cultural practice

The curation connects photography history, urban history, and visual everyday culture. The project is part of a nationwide research and transfer project on amateur and everyday photography, which also involves the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore, the University of Göttingen, the Seminar for Cultural Anthropology and Cultural History at the University of Jena, the Technical Collections Dresden, and the LWL Museum Henrichshütte.

A photography competition under the motto Discover Jena – my favorite place or view invites participants to share their own perspectives. This transforms the exhibition into a site of cultural education, where visitors not only view photographs but also reflect on their own engagement with images.

Art experience at the Jena City Museum

Between analog prints, private photo stories, and digital image practices, an aesthetic experience with social depth emerges. Everyone taking pictures? makes visible how images shape identity, belonging, and memory. The exhibition targets photography enthusiasts, fans of urban history, families, and anyone looking to rediscover their own perspective on Jena.

Conclusion

Visitors can expect a knowledgeable yet sensual art experience that bridges photographic art, urban history, and contemporary culture. Those who wish to understand how private images become collective memory should not miss this exhibition at the Jena City Museum.
