Photography as a Mirror of Everyday Life: Jena Discovers Its Image History

The exhibition Everyone Taking Pictures? Everyday and Amateur Photography in Jena at the Jena City Museum opens a view into a local photo culture that ranges from analog family photographs through the photography circles of the GDR to today's smartphone and social media images. From September 4 to December 30, 2026, a multifaceted dialogue unfolds between historical photographs and contemporary image practices.

Between Memory, Everyday Life, and Social Togetherness

Photography preserves personal moments and simultaneously narrates societal changes. Historical images from the collections of the City Museum, private archives, and photo clubs show how people have perceived their city, their families, and their surroundings. Each examination of a work leads to a fundamental question: What do images reveal about the time in which they are created?

From the Photography Circle of the GDR to the Digital Image Stream

A particular focus is on the long-established photography circle UNIFOK Jena e.V., which has shaped the city's photographic scene since the 1960s. The exhibition makes visible how amateur photography was learned, discussed, and further developed as a communal practice. Historical works are juxtaposed with current images from social media photographers. Thus, the technical development from the analog camera to the smartphone is made tangible, as is the shift in photographic publicness.

Aesthetic Experience and Cultural Education

The presentation combines art-historical context with everyday cultural education. Different image formats, materials, and photographic attitudes make the exhibition atmosphere varied: private memory images meet documentary recordings, club photography, and digital image worlds. This juxtaposition creates an art experience that not only conveys the history of photography but also sharpens one's own perception.

A Nationwide Research Project at the City Museum

The exhibition is part of a nationwide research and transfer project on amateur and everyday photography. Involved are, among others, the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore in Dresden, the Institute for Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at the University of Göttingen, the Seminar for Cultural Anthropology and Cultural History at the University of Jena, the Technical Collections Dresden, and the LWL Museum Henrichshütte in Hattingen. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation.

Conclusion: Experience Photography History Live

Visitors can expect an engaging exhibition about memory, community, and the everyday view of the world. Everyone Taking Pictures? invites you to see familiar images anew and to culturally reflect on your own photographic practice. Those who want to experience photography as painting with light, social memory, and a document of change should not miss this special art experience at the Jena City Museum.
