130 Years of Reading Culture: The Ernst-Abbe-Library in Historical Change
The Ernst-Abbe-Library Jena invites you to an exhibition about its eventful history from November 3 to November 7, 2026. In the Helene-Petrenz Hall, visitors will encounter the beginnings of the library, which opened in 1896 as a people’s reading hall and is still one of the oldest public libraries from the era of the reading hall movement.
From the People’s Reading Hall to the Modern Library
The starting point of the historical development was the call in 1895 for the establishment of an association for the setup and maintenance of a people’s reading hall. The Comenius Branch Society in Jena and the Ethical Society in Jena initiated the project together. Ernst Abbe, the later namesake of the library, played a significant role in this cultural education initiative.
Already on November 1, 1896, the reading hall opened its doors. It quickly developed into a model facility of the German library system. The exhibition makes visible how closely library history, technical innovation, and social change are interconnected.
Photographs, Posters, and Technical Milestones
Old and current photographs provide a vivid view of the spaces, people, and usage situations of the Ernst-Abbe-Library. Historical posters from the 100th anniversary year 1996 complement the documentary presentation and simultaneously illustrate how a library preserves its own cultural memory.
Additionally, milestones of technical development are highlighted. This work examination focuses not on painting or sculpture but on photographic documents, graphic design, and original testimonies of an institution, whose media, spaces, and forms of mediation have changed over 130 years.
Library History as Cultural Education
The exhibition is intended as a low-threshold access to the history of reading, learning, and public knowledge exchange. It combines historical research with aesthetic experience: image compositions, poster designs, typographic forms, and the exhibition atmosphere in the Helene-Petrenz Hall make library history sensually tangible.
From an art and cultural history perspective, the presentation shows how visual communication, societal reform ideas, and the development of public educational spaces interweave. The Ernst-Abbe-Library appears as a vibrant cultural place where media history, city history, and cultural participation come together.
Admission Free During Opening Hours
The exhibition is accessible free of charge during the opening hours of the Ernst-Abbe-Library. From Tuesday to Friday, the main library is open from 10 AM to 7 PM, and on Saturdays from 10 AM to 5 PM. The exhibition period extends from Tuesday, November 3, to Saturday, November 7, 2026.
Conclusion: A Unique Art Experience for History and Library Enthusiasts
The exhibition welcomes its guests with historical photographs, posters, and technical development steps that bring 130 years of public reading culture in Jena to life. Those interested in library history, cultural education, and the aesthetic impact of historical visual documents will discover a concentrated art experience in the everyday life of an important cultural institution. A visit to the Helene-Petrenz Hall is worthwhile as an inspiring examination of works and an encounter with the city's cultural memory.
