Your Face as Manga: Create a Digital Self-Portrait in Jena
How does one’s own face become an expressive manga portrait? In the manga drawing course at the Ernst-Abbe-Bibliothek Jena, adults learn the basics of manga drawing and then create a digital self-portrait in the popular style of Japanese comics.
Step by step to your own manga portrait
The creative workshop focuses on typical manga features: expressive eyes, characteristic facial features, stylized hair, and vibrant emotions. The introduction is hands-on and clearly guides through the individual drawing steps. No prior knowledge is required – enjoyment of drawing and curiosity about digital design are sufficient.
Drawing digitally with tablet and pen
For the event experience, the Ernst-Abbe-Bibliothek provides a tablet and pen. This allows participants to create their own self-portrait directly in digital format and utilize the possibilities of modern drawing tools. The calm atmosphere of the Helene-Petrenz hall provides the perfect setting for focused experimentation and creative ideas.
Creative workshop for adults
The course is specifically aimed at adults and combines cultural education, illustration, and digital media skills. In its event planning, the Ernst-Abbe-Bibliothek aims for accessible target audience outreach: The workshop offers a simple entry into the art of manga and invites participants to discover their own style.
Free admission and registration required
The manga drawing course takes place on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 3:30 PM. The event location is the Helene-Petrenz hall of the Ernst-Abbe-Bibliothek Jena at Engelplatz 2. Admission is free, but prior registration via email at eab@jena.de is required. The event is wheelchair accessible.
