Wish Images: How an Art Collection Discovers Its Present
The exhibition Wish Images. Acquisitions of the Jena Art Collection mainly presents new acquisitions from recent years and offers a multifaceted view of the development of the municipal collection. On November 12, 2026, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, video, and installation will meet in the Jena Art Collection.
Diversity of Media, Diversity of Perspectives
The exhibition brings different visual languages into a tension-filled dialogue. Color fields and drawn lines, photographic spaces and plastic forms make visible how diverse artistic perception can be. Each artwork invites viewers to focus on material, composition, spatial effects, and the specific atmosphere of the respective medium.
Collection as a Living Archive
At the center lies the question of how an art collection grows and changes through new acquisitions. The presentation makes collecting, preserving, and curating as cultural practices tangible. At the same time, it connects art historical contexts with immediate aesthetic experience and invites viewers to discover the relationships between individual works, eras, and artistic positions themselves.
A Farewell with Art Historical Weight
This exhibition marks the retirement of Erik Stephan after many years with the municipal museums in Jena. His curatorial work is closely linked to the development and expansion of the Jena Art Collection. Wish Images thus gains a dual perspective: the exhibition presents new holdings while simultaneously marking the conclusion of a significant curatorial era.
Cultural Education through Precise Perception
The art experience is aimed at everyone who is interested in modern and contemporary art, collection history, and curatorial decisions. The shift between painting, graphics, photography, sculpture, video, and installation encourages an open contemplation of the works and demonstrates how different materials and forms direct perception.
Conclusion: Experience New Acquisitions Immediately
Wish Images offers a concentrated exhibition atmosphere full of media diversity and art historical references. Visitors will experience how a collection sharpens its profile through new works while also creating space for surprises. Anyone wishing to discover the Jena Art Collection as a vibrant place of cultural education and aesthetic experience should definitely visit this exhibition on-site.
