JenaCraft: Children Design Their City of the Future

What should a place in Jena look like for children and young people to feel comfortable? In the four-day autumn holiday workshop JenaCraft – the City of the Future, young participants develop their own ideas for a youth-friendly city center and then creatively implement them in Minecraft.

With Minecraft, Urban Planning Becomes an Adventure

At the beginning, the question is which places in Jena are particularly popular and what makes a good gathering spot. Together, the young people collect their personal must-haves – things that must not be missing in a livable city. Afterwards, small groups create their own digital models of a place from Jena’s city center.

Creativity, Sustainability, and Genuine Participation

JenaCraft combines digital learning fun with sustainable urban development. The young people engage with age-appropriate topics such as urban planning, quality of stay, and their own needs in public spaces. Minecraft serves as a child-friendly tool that makes ideas visible, changeable, and collectively experienceable.

Learning Together and Realizing Own Ideas

Working in small groups strengthens communication, cooperation, and creative problem-solving. The family experience offers a special learning opportunity: Participants not only develop imaginative buildings but also address the question of what a safe, sustainable, and livable city for young people might look like.

Important Information for Families

The workshop is aimed at young interested individuals aged 10 to 14 and takes place in the Helene-Petrenz Hall of the Ernst-Abbe Library Jena. Participation is free, but prior registration is required. The event is already fully booked. The venue is designated as accessible.

Conclusion: Digital Urban Ideas with Real Impact

JenaCraft connects children's and youth participation, media competence, and sustainable urban development into a modern family and holiday offering. The young people experience how their own ideas turn into concrete city models – with lots of creativity, shared time, and visible fun in learning.
