JenaCraft: Building the City of the Future Together
What does a Jena look like where young people feel particularly at home? In the autumn holiday program JenaCraft, children and teenagers develop their own ideas for a youth-friendly city center and then creatively implement them in Minecraft. The family experience combines digital design, collaborative planning, and learning fun around sustainable urban development.
From Favorite Places to Future Ideas
At the beginning, participants look at Jena and discover which places they like and why. Together, they create personal must-haves – things that must not be missing in a youth-friendly city. It is about quality of stay, encounters, creativity, and how public spaces can become more attractive for young people.
Getting Creative with Minecraft
Next, the 10 to 14-year-olds design a square from the Jena city center in Minecraft in small groups. From initial ideas, digital models emerge that invite experimentation, modification, and further development. Working with the well-known computer game provides a child-friendly approach to architecture, urban planning, and sustainable development.
Age-Appropriate Workshop with Team Spirit
The workshop is aimed at young interested individuals aged 10 to 14 years. Group work promotes communication, cooperation, and personal design ideas. In addition to digital skills, learning experiences about urban development, participation, and responsible handling of living spaces are created. The offer is led by Felix Staacke from the DHLabor of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
Holiday Program at the Ernst-Abbe Library
JenaCraft takes place in the Helene-Petrenz Hall of the Ernst-Abbe Library Jena. The workshop is scheduled for October 22, 2026, at 09:00 AM and is part of a multi-day autumn holiday program from October 20 to October 22, 2026. Prior registration via email to eab@jena.de was required. The event is fully booked.
Conclusion: Digital Ideas for a Real Jena
JenaCraft connects children's laughter, curiosity, and joint tinkering with an important question: What should our city look like in the future? Participants experience that their ideas matter and urban development is not just reserved for adults. An inspiring family and holiday experience for young Minecraft fans interested in creativity, technology, and sustainable urban design.
