Escape the silence: When library history becomes a puzzle game
What does it feel like to track down forbidden books and historical secrets? In the three-day autumn holiday program Escape the silence, young people turn the youth area of the Ernst-Abbe-Library Jena into their own playing field and develop an exit game about the history of the library.
Literary history becomes an adventure
The focus is on the question of what happens in libraries when books are banned and censored. Participants engage with the history of access to knowledge during the National Socialist era and discover why freedom of opinion and information continues to hold central societal significance today.
From historical traces emerges a unique narrative world: The youth develop an exciting story, design tricky puzzles, and combine research, linguistic art, and playful thinking. Thus, the library becomes a place of learning where literary culture, memory, and creative media education come together directly.
Creativity, teamwork, and collaborative tinkering
The workshop format is aimed at young people aged 12 to 16. No prior knowledge is required. Curiosity, teamwork, and joy in puzzling are the most important prerequisites for this special literary experience.
Under the course leadership of Beke Bagusche from the DHLabor at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, original game ideas will be developed that make historical content understandable and sensibly experiential. The process combines research, dramaturgy, design, and logical combining.
The library as a living playing field
The Ernst-Abbe-Library becomes not only the venue but also a part of the game itself. Spaces, stories, and historical clues merge into an interactive learning landscape. The conclusion is the testing of the finished exit game by family and friends.
The reading atmosphere gives way to an equally intense encounter with authorship, history, language, and knowledge: It is not a finished book that takes center stage, but the collective development of a narrative. The format shows how literary quality also arises through characters, clues, dialogues, and narrative perspectives.
Conclusion: A workshop with lasting impact
Escape the silence combines literary education, memory culture, and creative game design. Participants can expect an intense workshop that links historical responsibility with imagination and teamwork. Those who want to experience how library history becomes their own adventure should register in advance via email.
