Jena Regional History between Archive, Landscape, and Present
The City Museum Jena invites you to the presentation of the fifth volume of the Yearbook for History and Natural Science of the Saale-Holzland District and the City of Jena. On November 10, 2026, the focus will be on historical sources, natural observations, and cultural developments that continue to shape Jena and its surroundings to this day.
A Yearbook as the Memory of a Region
The new volume connects scientifically oriented contributions with local historical discoveries. Archaeological and architectural investigations of churches, the history of Kahla and Ottendorf, the consequences of the Thirty Years' War, and church construction in Schlöben are central themes. Historical dominion boundaries and the significance of the former community of Laasdorf are also given a differentiated examination.
History Becomes Concrete
The literary and documentary quality of the yearbook is particularly vivid where major historical developments intersect with everyday life. Contributions regarding the medical care of the rural population around Jena around 1800, Georg II in the Camburg district, the Jena tram, and the Reichsbahn repair shop offer multifaceted perspectives on social, political, and technical change. The development of electricity in Camburg and the industrialization of the Jena urban landscape expand this historical resonance space.
Natural Science as a View of Landscape and Habitat
The genre of the regional yearbook gains an additional dimension through the natural science contributions. The landscape development of the Saale-Holzland, wild mammals in the urban area of Jena, and the rediscovery and reerection of the Gottlob-König stone in Isserstedter Holz make visible how closely natural spaces, cultural memory, and human use are interconnected.
Local Knowledge, Photography, and Cultural Heritage
Further contributions focus on cultural and artistic monuments on the Beutenberg Campus, railway photography, and forgotten sports facilities in Jena. The development of the Camburg City Museum and the Serba Railway Museum leads right into the regional museum and club culture. An obituary for Wolfgang Fiedler also preserves a personal voice in the cultural memory of the region.
Source Discoveries and New Research Perspectives
Special excitement arises from previously little-known historical sources. A document discovery in the newly discovered community archive of Leutra and a muster list from 1632 in the Eisenberg district open direct access to past life worlds. The volume is complemented by contributions to local anniversaries, reviews of regional historical publications, and a bibliography of selected new releases about Jena and the Saale-Holzland District.
Invitation to a Literary and Scientific Experience
The presentation at the City Museum Jena combines contributions from authors, regional research, and public cultural mediation. Visitors can expect a concentrated reading atmosphere where language, source work, and vivid history come together. Those who want to understand the region not just as a landscape but as a developed narrative will experience an informed author encounter with the cultural memory of East Thuringia.
The Yearbook 2026 makes history audible, visible, and debatable. The presentation offers the opportunity to familiarize oneself with the central themes of the new volume and to experience the regional historical discourse directly in the museum. Admission is free.
