Pelzer Workshop Jena: Hands-on Technology History
On the Day of Open Monuments, the Pelzer Workshop opens its doors for a rare discovery experience. In the authentic workshop from the first half of the 20th century, visitors encounter original rooms, vibrant local history, and a technical monument that makes Jena's industrial past immediately tangible.
A place where workshop history remains alive
The Pelzer Workshop tells the story of artisanal precision, repair culture, and the development of a traditional business in Fischergasse. The history of the machine locksmithing business Gebr. Pelzer began in 1828 in Wagnergasse; in 1908, it evolved into the firm Franz Pelzer in Fischergasse. In the two-story workshop building, repairs for butcher, agricultural, and printing equipment were once carried out. Even a patent for a sausage grill is part of the history of this unique place.
Guided tours with limited group size
The tours start at 11 AM and 2 PM. For safety reasons, the number of participants per tour is limited to 15 people. Registration is not possible. Those who cannot secure a spot can additionally visit the technical monument individually from 12 PM to 2 PM. This creates a compact yet intense city tour experience with plenty of room for details and atmosphere.
Monument Day in Jena with real industrial character
The Pelzer Workshop was taken over by the city of Jena in 1993 and has since been used as a museum. It preserves not only architectural substance but also a piece of Jena's industrial architecture and everyday history. The place is ideal for the Day of Open Monuments when historical rooms, cultural heritage, and urban development come together in a special way.
Travel and orientation
The meeting point and event location are at Fischergasse 1 in 07743 Jena. Its location in the city center facilitates access on foot and by public transportation. For the visit, punctuality is advisable as the tours only take place in small groups.
Conclusion: The Pelzer Workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience Jena's technology and craftsmanship history up close on September 13, 2026. Those who appreciate authentic spaces, historical insights, and a compact tour with real monument character should not miss this tour.
