BBL Analysis before the Final Phase
Science City Jena in the BBL: This is the Team's Situation under Mike Taylor before the End of the Season
Science City Jena enters the final phase of the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga 2025/2026 ranked 16th. After 34 games, the Thuringians have 24 points, with a record of 12 wins and 22 losses (35.3 percent). The recent form fits this picture: seven losses from the last ten games leave little room for error at the bottom of the table.
The Recent Results Fit the Season's Pattern
The latest results show how closely Jena can contest individual games – and how often points are still left behind in the end.
On May 10, they suffered a 65:83 defeat at ALBA BERLIN. Three days earlier, Jena narrowly won at home against MLP Academics Heidelberg with 81:79, and on May 2, they lost 79:89 away at the ROSTOCK SEAWOLVES.
Notably: In all three games, Joe Wieskamp was Jena's top scorer. This underscores his value as a reliable offensive option. At the same time, it indicates how much Jena relies on individual solutions in phases when the team play is not consistent enough.
The Statistics Show the Biggest Issues
The team stats reveal why the squad has not been able to move out of the lower ranks over the course of the season. Jena averages 81.1 points per game but concedes 88.9 – a clear deficit that mathematically puts many games in a difficult starting position.
There is also a second, structural level: With 15.3 assists per game, Jena is well below the opponent's average of 18.4. This gap points less to a single problem and more to a pattern: less ball movement, fewer easy finishes – and thus more shots under pressure.
The efficiency stats reflect this as well: Jena shoots 42.4 percent from the field, while opponents shoot 45.5 percent.
The rebound gap is small at 39.9 to 40.3. However, the data overall suggests that Jena rarely matches up in the key categories – point differential, playmaking through assists, and shooting efficiency. This combination explains why even close games often slip away: when your own offense creates fewer good shots and the defense allows too many points, the margin for error is small.
Balanced between Home and Away, but without a Clear Advantage
Remarkably, the home and away records are almost mirror images: six home wins and six away wins are matched by eleven losses each at Sparkassen-Arena Jena and eleven losses in other arenas. Statistically, there is no clear home advantage.
Overall, the team has scored 2,756 points, 1,386 of them at home. Jena plays its home games at Sparkassen-Arena (3,125 seats) – but the numbers show: the atmosphere alone has not been enough to stabilize the record so far.
The head coach is Mike Taylor, with David Fränzle and Dominik Günthner on the coaching staff. The roster includes 19 players with an average age of 26.9 years; the team is broadly set up with 9 guards, 7 forwards, and 3 centers. Science City Jena has been playing in the BBL again since 2025 – and thus still faces the sporting challenge of establishing itself at this level in the long term.
Before the end of the season, the data mainly sends a warning: weak recent results, a clearly negative point differential, and disadvantages in assists and shooting percentage. Joe Wieskamp's consistent scoring role is a bright spot – but for noticeable relief at the bottom of the table, Jena needs more stability at both ends of the court.
